The Fall TBR Is Getting Out of Control: The September & October Books Everyone Is Talking About

There are two kinds of readers in August:

The ones who are calmly enjoying their current book…

…and the ones staring at their September and October release calendar wondering how they are possibly supposed to read all of these books.

Because fall 2026 is shaping up to be ridiculous in the very best possible way.

BookTok is buzzing. TBR lists are growing. Preorders are being made. Group chats are becoming increasingly unhinged.

And if you are a romantasy, fantasy romance, dark romance, or generally-book-obsessed reader, your wallet may already be in danger.

September Is Coming In Hot

September is packed with new romantasy releases, sequels, new series, and highly anticipated fantasy romance titles. Current release calendars are tracking more than ten romantasy releases for the month alone.

One of the September releases getting attention is The Knave and the Moon by Rachel Gillig, the follow-up to The Knight and the Moth and the conclusion of the Stonewater Kingdom duology.

If gothic romantasy, mysterious worlds, atmospheric storytelling, and a healthy dose of “I have absolutely no idea what is happening but I am obsessed” are your thing, this one belongs on the radar.

And then there are the new worlds waiting to be discovered.

White Raven by Stacey Marie Brown kicks off a new fantasy-romance trilogy, bringing dark Norse-inspired fantasy romance to the September lineup.

Which means September isn't just about catching up on series you've already started.

It's also about making the questionable decision to start another series when your TBR is already approximately 47 books long.

We support this decision.

And Then October Happened…

Just when we thought September might be enough to destroy our TBRs, October showed up.

And October has Sarah J. Maas.

The upcoming sixth A Court of Thorns and Roses book, A Court of Splintered Harmony, is scheduled for October 27, 2026, and it is easily one of the biggest romantasy releases of the fall.

Yes.

October 27.

Mark the calendar.

Cancel the plans.

Tell everyone you know that you will be unavailable.

The return to the ACOTAR universe has been one of the biggest pieces of romantasy news of the year, and readers have already been buzzing about what comes next for the world of Prythian and the Valkyries.

And because apparently one highly anticipated fantasy release wasn't enough, October is bringing plenty of other books into the conversation too.

Fall's lineup includes fantasy, romance, thrillers, literary fiction, and plenty of books from bestselling authors. The Associated Press recently highlighted the unusually strong fall fiction slate, including major returns from authors such as Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros.

Basically?

Our TBRs never stood a chance.

The Real Problem Isn't Finding Something to Read

It's choosing what to read first.

Do you read the sequel you've been waiting months—or possibly years—for?

Do you start the new fantasy romance everyone on BookTok is screaming about?

Do you finally tackle the book that's been sitting on your shelf because you were “saving it”?

Or do you completely abandon your carefully organized TBR and reread your favorite series for the fifth time?

Personally, we believe there are no wrong answers.

Except maybe saying:

“I don't think I need another book.”

We don't know her.

Fall Reading Season Has Officially Begun

There is something about autumn that makes reading feel even better.

A blanket.

A giant cup of coffee.

A candle burning somewhere nearby.

A rainy afternoon.

A book that was supposed to be “just one chapter.”

And suddenly it's 2:17 a.m. and you're emotionally attached to a fictional man who doesn't exist.

Again.

It's basically a seasonal tradition.

And with the sheer number of anticipated September and October releases, fall 2026 may be the perfect excuse to lean into it.

So make the TBR.

Add the preorders.

Clear the calendar.

Charge the Kindle.

And maybe warn your friends and family that you will be entering your “do not disturb, I'm reading” era.

Because the books are coming.

And judging by the current buzz…

we are absolutely not ready.
